The competition for HVAC contractors is very stiff. If you browse the internet or look in the yellow pages, you have a good chance of finding many other contractors who offer the same services as you. Success won’t come easy unless you take your business up a notch.

To be a step ahead of the competition, ensure you possess the following key qualities.

Proper Certification

Whether you specialize in residential or commercial refrigeration systems, it pays to be certified. If you’re in the US, you need to have a North American Technician Excellence (NATE) certification. Technicians who hold this are known for being highly proficient and professional.

A Good Reputation

Potential clients visit third party websites that provide ratings and reviews for contractors across various fields. To attract their attention, you must have good reviews.  Of course, the only way to ensure that you will receive consistent favourable reviews is to do your best in all your projects.

Always Provide A Reasonable Estimate

The prices you offer should not be too low or too high. If the cost of your services seems too good to be true, potential clients might assume that you are not insured or licensed. If it is unreasonably expensive, you might not be approached by clients who are on a tight budget.

Keep in mind that some potential clients are more interested in contractors who survey the area before coming up with an estimate. Always ask to visit the home or business establishment first, instead of providing a definite estimate via email or over the phone.

Be Part of a Renowned Association

Your chances of attracting clients can significantly increase if you become a member of a reputable professional association. In the US, the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) is the premier organization for HVAC contractors. Visit their website if you are interested in becoming a part of them and receiving quality assurance.

Offer Informative and Useful Advice

You need to be well-versed in every important aspect of HVAC. Whether you are hired to repair, maintain or install, you must be able to offer sound advice to your client.

Keep abreast with the latest HVAC technology, including the latest updates and forthcoming trends in the HVAC industry by reading the news and attending workshops and seminars. This will allow you to provide your clients with suggestions that suit their budget and preferences.

If you sell products, make sure that they are ENERGY STAR rated. And when you suggest a product or service to your client, tell them about its pros and cons as well as how it will affect their monthly or annual energy bills so they can make an informed decision.

Establish a Shop or Office

Having a brick-and-mortar shop clients can visit gives you a positive image. Clients will find it reassuring that you have an office they can go to whenever they are in need of your products and services.

Whether you are newcomer or a seasoned contractor with years of experience, you can’t be renowned, sought-after and successful without these essential qualities.
